Werner scores twice for Chelsea but Southampton fight back for draw | Football News

LONDON: Southampton came from behind twice on Saturday to earn a 3-3 draw at Chelsea despite Timo Werner scoring two skilful individual goals for the home side, his first in the Premier League.
Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard scored from a free kick in injury time after an entertaining and open game of fluctuating fortunes.
Werner, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in June had earlier lit up Stamford Bridge with a delightful dummied goal in the 15th minute and another in the 28th when he lobbed over the advancing Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy, then headed into the empty goal.
The $60 million striker should have had a third in the 40th minute but he blazed the ball over the bar and three minutes later Southampton pulled one back when Danny Ings rounded goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after Werner’s compatriot Kai Havertz lost the ball deep in the Chelsea half.
Southampton kept up the attacking pressure in the second half and earned their equaliser in the 57th minute after some shambolic home defending when Kurt Zouma misjudged a backpass and Kepa missed the ball which Che Adams eventually slammed in to the roof of the net.
But Chelsea struck back immediately with a well worked goal, the ever-busy Werner crossing for Havertz to earn his own first Premier League goal with a simple tap-in, only for Southampton to equalise again in injury time.

Zimbabwe coach Rajput skips Pakistan tour after Indian Embassy in Harare seeks exemption | Cricket News

KARACHI: Zimbabwe cricket coach Lalchand Rajput has travelled with the team for a tour of Pakistan after the Indian embassy in Harare requested his exemption from the limited-over series.
A statement from Zimbabwe Cricket said that Rajput will miss the tour following the request from the Indian embassy. In Rajput’s absence, bowling coach Douglas Hondo would take charge of the team during the tour.
“@Lalchandrajput7 will miss the @TheRealPCB tour after the Embassy of India in Harare wrote to @ZimCricketv asking that he be exempted from visiting Pakistan. The Embassy of Pakistan in Harare had issued a visa to Rajput,” the ZC tweeted.

“With @Lalchandrajput7 unavailable, @ZimCricketv has appointed bowling coach Douglas Hondo to take charge of the team for the three ODIs and as many T20Is games against @TheRealPCB.”

‘ESPNCricinfo’ reported that the exemption was sought citing “travel guidelines of the government for its citizens”.
The Zimbabwean team is scheduled to play three ODIs against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, starting October 30, before moving to Lahore for three T20Is. The visiting team arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday.
A top source in the PCB said that the directives of the Indian government to not allow Rajput to visit Pakistan had caused some concerns in the Board. India and Pakistan have had no bilateral cricketing ties due to tense diplomatic ties between the two countries.
“The concerns are genuine because the PCB is waiting for confirmation from the ICC and BCCI by January-February that the national team would be issued visas by the Indian government for next year’s World T20 in India,” the source said.
“Makes no sense to stop him from travelling to Pakistan when he has been issued a visa. The PCB is bound to provide the best security and hospitality to the visiting contingent as per regulations,” he added.
The PCB has also invited South Africa and England to send teams to Pakistan in January-February.
A delegation of Cricket South Africa is due in Lahore next month during the Pakistan Super League matches to inspect the security arrangements for their team.
The 58-year-old Rajput was appointed as Zimbabwe’s full time coach in August 2018, after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup.
He played two Tests and four ODIs for India between 1985 and 1987.
The Zimbabwe players were required to undergo two COVID-19 tests — one in Harare prior to their departure on Monday, and another on Tuesday.
This will be Zimbabwe’s first tour of Pakistan since 2015.

“The one who only dealt in 4s and 6s while batting turns 42. Even that adds up to 6. Tum jiyo hazaron saal aur saal ke din ho 50 hazaar. Janamdin mubarak @virendersehwag,” batting legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted.

India captain Virat Kohli took to Twitter and wrote: “Happy birthday @virendersehwag bhai. Have a great day.”

“Many more happy returns of the day to a man whose positivity and self-belief is always a reminder of how to keep things simple in life. #HappyBirthdayViru!,” former cricketer VVS Laxman tweeted.

Sehwag’s previous triple ton was against Pakistan at Multan in 2004.

Chennai Super Kings: CSK stand on the verge of unwanted IPL history: Can they make the playoff cut? | Cricket News

Published

on

By

Think Chennai Super Kings and you will think of a team which is synonymous with consistency in the Indian Premier League (IPL). From the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, CSK have always been a force to reckon with.
Barring the two seasons when the team was suspended (2016 & 2017), CSK have always made the play-offs, going on to win the title three times. They are the second most successful team in the history of the IPL, behind Mumbai Indians, who have won the title four times.
The 2020 season however has not been kind to the yellow brigade. Out of the 10 matches they have played so far, MS Dhoni‘s team have managed to win just 3. The 7 wicket loss against the Rajasthan Royals on Monday was their 7th loss this season. Incredibly, the mighty CSK unit find themselves at the very bottom of the IPL points table this time, with just 4 matches left to play in the league stage, prompting many to ask -‘Will this be the first season CSK don’t make the IPL playoffs?’

CSK ARE DOWN, BUT NOT OUT YET
So can CSK still make the playoffs this season? The simple answer to that is yes. However the road ahead is anything but simple for Dhoni and co.
For them to scrape through to the play-offs, they will of course have to win all their remaining four matches. That will take their points tally to 14 points.
They will also have to significantly improve their net run rate, which currently stands at an abysmal -0.463.
They might also have to hope that some other results go their way and in case it boils down to NRR, they can sneak into the top four.

VERY COMPETITIVE 2020 SEASON
The ongoing 2020 season is turning out to be an extremely competitive season. And that can be both an advantage and a disadvantage for CSK.
Overall, the three stand out teams so far this season have been Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kolkata Knight Riders still haven’t really found their mojo, but are still very much in the running. Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have had a stop-start season, but are also very much in the reckoning. Kings XI Punjab, like CSK are holding on for dear life.
In many ways KKR, RR and SRH are the biggest threats for CSK. If these three teams win more than they lose, chances of CSK entering the last four could be very difficult.
However, if the top three teams currently (DC, MI & RCB) pull well ahead of the rest, while KKR, RR and SRH stutter and CSK win all their remaining matches, 14 points could see them make the playoffs. Remember last season in 2019, the top three teams, MI, CSK and DC were all on 18 points at the end of the league stage and the fourth team to make the play-offs was Sunrisers Hyderabad with 12 points, barely piping KKR and KXIP who both had 12 points, but a worse NRR than SRH.

WILL CSK MAKE WHOLESALE CHANGES TO THEIR PLAYING XI?
This is the million dollar question that no one has an answer to. CSK traditionally have been a team which doesn’t like to chop and change too much. But this time, with their backs to the wall, they might have to.
In the top 10 run getters of the season so far, CSK have only one batsman (Faf du Plessis with 375 runs in 10 matches).
In the top 10 wicket takers of the season so far, there are no CSK bowlers (Deepak Chahar and Sam Curran with 10 wickets apiece are 11th and 12th on the list).
CSK have reached a stage where they will have to perhaps look at giving the likes of Imran Tahir (purple cap winner last season), Lungi Ngidi, Micthell Santner, Narayan Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad etc more games on rotation and drop players who haven’t really been pulling their weight.
MATCHES LEFT FOR CSK TO PLAY
The three time champions have four matches left to play. Their opponents in the remaining matches will be Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. With every match from here on being a must win game for them, CSK will have their task cut out in their remaining four league stage matches.
CSK MATCHES COMING UP
Oct 23 (Friday) – CSK vs MI in Sharjah
Oct 25 (Sunday) – RCB vs CSK in Dubai
Oct 29 (Thursday) – CSK vs KKR in Dubai
Nov 1 (Sunday) – CSK vs KXIP in Abu Dhabi
