Two VKE Stars Shine in ISRO Cyberspace essay Competition

PUNE: Two city students have stood 10th and 11th in the national essay writing competition conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation that conducted an online competition and received over two lakh entries from across the country.

Both the students are studying at the victorious Kidss Educares, an IB World School, and class XI student Saloni Maniar stood 10th in the country while Simran Pashankar stood 11th. A statement issued by the schools said that out of over two lakh entries about 500 were recognised, and the two city girls were also ranked.

Saloni said that, “Since my early age I wanted to become a scientist. I was always drawn towards the night sky and the beauty of how mysterious the world outside our planet is. As time passed, I developed immense interest in the field of physics. I find theoretical physics, and astrophysics quite fascinating and have always tried to gain more knowledge in these areas.”

For the ISRO Cyberspace competition 2020, Saloni chose to author an essay on “Challenges & possibilities in frontier Research area of Space Science & Technology in next two decades.” Saloni said, “I wrote about the challenges and solutions in three space sectors — earth based, space exploration, and space habitation. Through this task I got an opportunity to dive deep into my most cherished subject and gained a wonderful experience to share my ideas with the world.”

The topic given to Simran Pashankar was “Space Environment and its challenges”. She had written a 1000 words essay on the given topic. Simran conducted a lot of research on the said topic before she could start her essay. “I was a little nervous at the beginning and I knew I would be competing with elite students across the country, but I believed in the Vedanta system that was taught to me in my school. Therefore, I was fearless and accepted the challenge. When I saw the result, I felt proud of myself.” They have also received a certificate each from ISRO.

Bengal ranks first in decline of school dropout rate: Survey

KOLKATA: West Bengal occupies the top position in the decline of dropout rate among school students during 2018-2020, the ruling Trinamool Congress said in a statement quoting a national survey. According to the Annual State of Education Report (ASER) 2020, the school dropout rate in the state declined from 3.3 per cent to 1.5 per cent while it went up from four per cent to 5.5 per cent at the national level, the statement said.

The dropout rate in some bigger states like Karnataka, Telangana and Rajasthan was 11.3 per cent, 14 per cent and 14.9 per cent respectively, the statement said quoting the survey conducted among 52,227 families of 16,974 villages in 584 districts of 26 states.

According to the survey, West Bengal also holds the first position in the country in terms of text books provided to the students with 99.7 per cent coverage, while in bigger states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, the same stands at 79.6 per cent, 60.4 per cent, 95 per cent, 34.6 per cent and 80.8 per cent respectively, the statement said quoting the report.

“West Bengals initiative to continue education during the COVID-19 pandemic through digital and other electronic modes has also been acknowledged in the report,” it said.

Chairman of the Syllabus Committee Aveek Majumder told , the significant decline in the dropout rate was made possible by the continuous efforts of the state to ensure that not a single child, including girls, left studies due to financial reasons.

“We have been following a policy where every child in state-run and state-aided school is given text books according to the curriculum decided by the syllabus committee. This has been going on for past several years. The high percentage is a reflection of that policy,” he said.

During the pandemic, the school education department ensured that students were imparted tutorials in the best possible manner as the institutions were closed, Majumder said.

“From tutorials on TV channels to online classes, every possible alternative was adopted in the present situation. In madrasas, parents were given study materials during midday meal distribution on certain dates and the guardians returned the home tasks on designated dates later on,” he said.

Asked if classes can be resumed on TV channels with no definite information on school reopening yet, Majumder said, “we will go by the advisory of the state and decide accordingly”.

The ASER report is an initiative by the Pratham Education Foundation which conducts a survey in the entire country every year.

Pratham is one of the largest non-governmental organisations in the country which works towards providing quality education to underprivileged children.

TAPMI, University of Southampton sign MoA for academic, research collaborations

MANIPAL: T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal, and University of Southampton, United Kingdom signed a memorandum of association (MoA) to develop academic and research collaborations. Faculty from both schools also joined the signing ceremony that was held digitally.

Madhu Veeraraghavan, director, TAPMI said international collaborations form part of TAPMIs vision to facilitate development of high-quality management education in India. In this process, TAPMI’s quest for high quality research creates more mind space among emerging management educators. TAPMI also contributes to the management education community, he noted.

Laura Costanzo, head of Southampton Business School, University of Southampton applauded joint efforts put in by both schools, at the time of Covid. TAPMI and the university are both crowned by double international accreditations — Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and Association to MBAs (AMBA). Both are in pursuit of EQUIS. In many ways, both institutions share common goals and interests, Laura noted.

Padmadas Sabu, associate dean – international, faculty of social sciences, University of Southampton, provided a detailed presentation about life at University of Southampton. Vishwanathan Iyer, professor and dean (academics), TAPMI dwelt about various avenues for faculty and student exchanges in both schools.

The heads of internationalisation in both schools – Kavitha Ranganathan, associate professor, TAPMI and Rob Angell, director of internationalisation, associate professor, University of Southampton, emphasized that both institutions have already conceived research ideas, subject level roundtables, and avenues for faculty and student exchange over the next three years.

As TAPMI and the University are both signatories of United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (UN-PRME), Raghunath Rudran, professor and dean research, TAPMI, said, “I see this collaboration to be totally synergistic with our PRME efforts and in alignment with sustainable development goals. We have a shared view that sustainable development forms the bridge between the UK and India to support and deepen our collaboration activities”.

Utkal University, RDW University publish final year results

BHUBANESWAR: Utkal University and Rama Devi Women’s University on Friday announced results of their final semester/year examination.

Utkal University has published results of science and commerce streams of Plus III final year/sixth semester students. Geology student Sagarika Das of Stewart Science College, Cuttack, has topped the science stream by securing 9.66 CGPA. Similarly, Ipsa Baliarsingh of DAV School of Business Management, Bhubaneswar, topped the university in commerce stream by securing 9.55 CGPA.

Pass percentage of commerce stream is 96.7, while it is 98.7 per cent for science stream. The university has also published results of second and fourth semester (back paper) of Plus III science and commerce streams.

Rama Devi Women’s University Bhubaneswar has published results of final year/semester examinations of arts, science and commerce (undergraduate and postgraduate). In PG examinations, the total pass percentage is 89.46. Similarly, in UG examinations, the pass percentage is 90.06 in arts, 94.48 in science and 74.21 in commerce. Pass percentage in BEd examination is 100.
