Swarnajayanti Fellowship to three IISER Pune faculty members

PUNE: Three scientists at IISER Pune, Angshuman Nag (associate professor, Chemistry), Anup Biswas (associate professor, Mathematics) and Rejish Nath (associate professor, Physics) are among those selected for the Department of Science and Technology (DST)’s Swarnajayanti Fellowships for 2019-20.

Initiated to mark the fiftieth year of India’s independence, the Swarnajayanti Fellowships are awarded by union government’s DST, to a very select number of scientists in the country, working in various frontier areas of science and technology. The award comprises a monthly fellowship received in addition to salary, and a yearly grant for research for five years. Additionally, the project proposals submitted by fellows are considered for funding by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) as per norms.

Of this year’s 21 Swarnajayanti Fellowships, three have gone to scientists from IISER Pune working in diverse disciplines. The fellowships will support Nag’s research on designing materials for light emitting diodes; work of mathematician Biswas on controlled diffusion, queuing theory and potential theory; and Nath’s research on ultra-cold atoms and quantum body physics.

Sanjiv Mittal appointed new Sambalpur VC

BHUBANESWAR: Sanjiv Mittal was appointed as vice-chancellor of Sambalpur University for a period of four years. Mittal is presently working as a professor, University School of Management Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi.

Governor and chancellor of universities Ganeshi Lal appointed Mittal as the new VC of the Sambalpur University with effect from the date he assumes office as such or until further orders whichever is earlier. The outgoing VC Deepak Kumar Behera’s term ended on January 17.

After taking interviews of three shortlisted candidates, the governor has selected 62-year-old Mittal for the top job. He has 29 years of teaching experience. He has also 111 publications in his name and successfully guided 11 PhD scholars.

On November 25 last year, the higher education department had issued advertisements for the post of vice-chancellor of the Sambalpur University, Ravenshaw University and Odisha State Open University.

For Sambalpur University and Ravenshaw University, tenure of the VCs will be four years from the date he/she assumes office or till he/she attains 67 years of age, whichever is earlier. For Odisha State Open University, tenure of VC is three years and the age limit is 65 years.

Sources said the governor will select vice-chancellors of the Ravenshaw University and the Odisha State Open University within next two days.

In November last year, the Governor had selected VCs for six universities- Utkal University, Fakir Mohan University, Rama Devi Women’s University, GM University Sambalpur, Khallikote University Berhampur and Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University (formerly North Odisha University) Baripada.

Mahindra Varsity Professor bags international award

HYDERABAD: Bishnu Pal, Dean Academics and Professor of Natural Sciences at Mahindra University’s Ecole Centrale School of Engineering, has been awarded ‘The 2021 SPIE Maria J Yzuel Educator Award’ by The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Pal has been named for this award ‘in recognition of four decades of sustained contributions in education, outreach, research, technical program committees of global flagship conferences, and editing popular publications in guided wave optics and photonics’.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the World’s foremost community of Optics and Photonics. SPIE has over 255000 constituents from 183 countries and being appreciated by your own peer group is always heartening. When I look back at my career and the students that I taught and researchers that I worked with, I’m amazed at the calibre of the people I came in contact with and it is always a delight to see them excel,” said Pal.

Congratulating Pal, the 2018 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Donna Strickland from Waterloo University, Canada, said, “It is well-deserved for your many contributions to training optical scientists from your own teaching to the incredible service you do for the optics community.”

The SPIE Maria J Yzuel Educator Award recognizes outstanding contributions to optics education by an educator in the field.

The award will be formally given to him at the annual award Banquet during the SPIE Optics+ Photonics conference scheduled in San Diego, USA between August 1 and August 5, 2021.

NEW DELHI: The Railways Recruitment Board RRB) has released the Phase 3 examination notification for the recruitment of various NTPC graduate and undergraduate posts.
