NIOS 2021 Exams: Parents demand cancellation of upcoming board exams

Published

on

MUMBAI: After complaints from parents in the city regarding the National Institute of Open Schooling’s upcoming board exams, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken cognizance of the grievance.

Parents from the city are demanding that the board does not conduct the examinations scheduled this month. “We live in Andheri west and have got our exam center in Mumbai Central. We have to travel all the way from Andheri to that centre for the exam. In the absence of proper public transport and our kids having low immunity, it’s really very risky for them to venture out in these circumstances,” said Melody Pereira, a parent.

The parents have also complained about the unavailability of writers, delay in receiving study material and no reduction in syllabus like the other boards. Anubha Sahai from the India Wide Parents Association which wrote to NCPCR said, “Books were delivered late amid the pandemic and some students in remote parts of the country are still waiting for reading material. This has affected the preparation of students. All other boards have also reduced the syllabus and postponed their exams for the month of May. The board must at least provide an option to appear for exams in an online format.”

Board officials however said the exams were being conducted in line with the ministry of education. “All safety norms will be followed. We have discussed with our regional head for Mumbai and found that conducting board exams has been permitted by the local authorities. In case parents can’t find writers for their children, they can be the writer. We have already alerted the exam centres about the same. The board is very child friendly and inclusive and all precautions are already in place,” said an official. The BMC on Tuesday allowed schools to conduct board examinations for classes X and XII in the offline mode.
