Manchester City: Raheem Sterling’s strike sees Manchester City beat Arsenal | Football News

on

MANCHESTER: Raheem Sterling scored the only goal as Pep Guardiola got the better of Mikel Arteta in Manchester City‘s 1-0 win over Arsenal to move three points off the top of the Premier League table.
On another high-scoring Saturday elsewhere in the English top-flight, the mutual respect between City boss Guardiola and his former assistant Arteta led to a far more cautious encounter.
However, Sterling’s strike midway through the first-half was enough to relaunch City’s title challenge after failing to win two of their first three league games of the new season.
Arsenal remain without an away league win against one of the ‘big six’ in 28 games dating back to January 2015.
And despite a spirited performance, the fact they have lost again at Anfield and the Etihad in the first five games of the campaign shows the strides Arteta still has to make to restore the Gunners to title contenders.

Arteta got the better of his old boss when the sides last met in the FA Cup semi-finals in July and Guardiola responded with a change to a 3-5-2 system to match up with Arsenal.
The move nearly paid off within a minute as Riyad Mahrez curled inches wide after a flowing move from one end to the other.
Sergio Aguero returned for the home side for the first time since June alongside Sterling in attack.
In the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, Sterling captained City and led from the front as he was on hand to open the scoring after Bernd Leno could only parry Phil Foden’s initial effort.
Leno kept Arsenal in the contest when he denied Foden again from Aguero’s unselfish pass.

But it was Ederson who ensured City went in ahead at half-time with a string of saves as Guardiola’s men again failed to convince at the back.
Bukayo Saka was Arsenal’s biggest threat and the 19-year-old was denied by a brilliant Ederson save after a neat one-two with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang was next to fire too close to the Brazilian stopper when he was one-on-one and onside despite the linesman’s flag being raised.
Arsenal also saw strong penalty appeals fall on deaf ears with the final action of the first-half when Kyle Walker’s high foot was not punished as he challenged Gabriel Magalhaes inside the area.

The presence of De Bruyne was missed as City again failed to control of the game once in front.
Leicester came from behind to win 5-2 at the Etihad and Leeds also took a deserved point after a blistering opening from City before the international break.
Far from the free-flowing attacking force of the past three seasons, City were happy to sit on their lead after the break.
But in a second period short on goalmouth action, Nicolas Pepe’s weak header that was easily claimed by Ederson was the closest Arsenal came to an equaliser.

SHARJAH (UAE): Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli was dismissed by pacer Sandeep Sharma once again during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
This is the seventh time that the medium-pacer has managed to dismiss Kohli in the IPL.

In the 12 innings against Sandeep Sharma, Kohli has managed to score just 68 runs with a strike rate of 139. The batsman fell prey to the bowling of Sharma seven times.
Kohli managed to score just seven runs from seven balls. Sharma bowled an outswinger to Kohli, and the RCB skipper failed to keep his drive down and was caught at short extra cover by Kane Williamson.
Only one more batsman has managed to get out to a single bowler seven times in the IPL. Zaheer Khan has managed to dismiss MS Dhoni seven times in the league.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bowl first against Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB had got the better of SRH in their clash earlier this season.
The Kohli-led side is in second place with 14 points while Hyderabad are at the seventh spot with 10 points.
Injured Vijay Shankar is not part of the SRH team for the clash against RCB. On the other hand, Navdeep Saini comes in for Shivam Dube and Isuru Udana replaces Dale Steyn for Bangalore.

Walker strike gives Manchester City 1-0 win at Sheffield United | Football News

SHEFFIELD: Manchester City moved two points off the top of the Premier League as Kyle Walker‘s long-range strike was enough to see off winless Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane.
Pep Guardiola’s men had won just two of their opening five league games of the season and are yet to hit top gear ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad next weekend.
The visitors dominated the game, but had just Walker’s speculative shot to show for it as they again lacked a ruthless streak without a natural striker.
Ferran Torres played as the centre-forward in the absence of the injured Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and the Spanish winger had an abundance of chances to net his first Premier League goal.
Aaron Ramsdale was busy in the Blades’ goal as he twice-denied Torres from close range, while he unconvincingly parried Rodrigo’s long-range effort behind.
Walker finally broke the deadlock from similar range on 28 minutes as his shot arrowed low past Ramsdale’s right-hand, but there was a muted celebration from the England international against his boyhood club.
The one-way traffic continued early in the second-half as Torres failed to lift the ball over the stranded Ramsdale as he rushed off his line.
Kevin De Bruyne flashed a shot across goal and wide following another attacking burst from Walker before Ramsdale produced his best save of the game from Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick.
However, City’s failure to kill off the game gave Chris Wilder’s men chances to snatch an unlikely point.
John Lundstram had the best chance for the hosts when he side-footed Sander Berge’s low cross over.
But Sheffield United have still scored just three goals in seven games to start the season and remain second bottom on just one point.
City, by contrast, have won four of their last five in all competitions as they slowly click into gear after a disrupted start to the season due to injuries, coronavirus cases and just a two-week long pre-season.

Austrian Thiem joins Djokovic in skipping Paris Masters | Tennis News

Austrian Dominic Thiem has joined world number one Novak Djokovic in pulling out of next week’s Paris Masters after struggling with blisters in his foot during the Vienna Open.
U.S. Open champion Thiem complained of the problem after his title defence in Vienna ended in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Thiem would have had little time to recover as the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the year starts on Monday.
He is expected to use the break to get some rest before travelling to London for the season-ending ATP Finals, which takes place from Nov. 15-22.
Defending champion Djokovic opted out of the Paris tournament as he will not lose any ranking points under the ATP Tour’s revised system this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rafael Nadal will be the top seed at the Paris Masters while Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas will be seeded second with seven of the top 10 men’s player attending the tournament.
Nadal, who won his record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this month, will return to Paris seeking to equal Djokovic’s record haul of 36 ATP Masters 1000 titles.
The Spaniard has a first round bye and will open his Paris campaign against Filip Krajinovic or Feliciano Lopez in the second round.
Russia’s Andrey Rublev and Argentine Diego Schwartzman will also hope to seal the remaining two spots in the ATP Finals, which is played between the top eight men’s single players, with strong results in Paris.
