Julie And The Phantoms Blew Me Away

Published

on

Julie and the Phantoms dropped on Netflix yesterday, and let’s just say it exceeded all of my expectations. After planning on watching one or two episodes, I ended up watching the entire season in one night, and I’m already waiting for a Season 2.

If you are a normal person who isn’t me, you probably didn’t watch this entire show the minute it became available. But here are some reasons why you should start watching it as soon as possible:

1.

The music in this show is no joke.

Netflix

The songs are a serious bop and I would personally listen to this playlist every day for the rest of my life. While it is a show first, they aren’t pulling any punches when it comes to songwriting and performing.

2.

It is filled with new stars who have some serious talent, like Madison Reyes, who plays the lead role of Julie.

Netflix

This cast clearly got their spots on talent alone, and you can’t help but fall in love with their quirky characters. It is a refreshing break from all the movies I watch that only feature big names.

3.

The main characters actually look their age.

Netflix

While the actors who play the ghosts are a bit older than their high school characters, the lead role of Julie is played by 16-year-old Madison Reyes, and her best friend Flynn is played by 15-year-old Jadah Marie. Finally, high schoolers who actually look like high schoolers and not fully grown adults.

4.

It has ghosts, which makes it the perfect show for the upcoming spooky season.

Netflix

Do you love spooky season but are terrified of horror movies? This show is perfect for fall since it features a more family-friendly and hilarious approach to the ghostly world.

5.

The characters have actual chemistry.

6.

I mean, look at that EYE CONTACT.

Netflix

There is absolutely no questioning their attraction to one another.

7.

It has the perfect balance of drama and comedy.

Netflix

Julie is dealing with the loss of her mother, with whom she shared a love of music. This show deals with that topic with grace and lightheartedness.

8.

Madison Reyes’ (Julie) inspiration is Vanessa Hudgens circa High School Musical era, and that is something we can all agree on.

9.

Just like Vanessa as Gabriella, these girls are serving some serious looks that are making me jealous of a 16-year-old’s wardrobe.

10.

And they are seriously friendship goals.

Netflix

I mean, Julie wrote the most meaningful and amazing song for Flynn. If that isn’t true friendship, then I don’t know what is.

11.

The ghosts are from the ’90s, which makes me happy to get some millennial energy in a 2020 teen drama.

Netflix

I honestly have never related to a character more than I relate to these ghosts when they are trying to understand new Gen-Z slang.

12.

It has strong morals.

Netflix

Characters own up to their mistakes and say sorry while accepting the consequences. There is mutual respect between characters and their families.

13.

There is diverse representation.

Netflix

Not only does this show feature a strong Latino community, but it also features a single dad successfully raising his kids. We love to see it.

14.

Did I mention Madison Reyes’ voice? She has the voice of an absolute angel and has more talent in her pinky finger than I have in my whole body.

15.

Finally, this show actually does musicals right.

Netflix

No more wondering why they are randomly breaking into song and no one else notices. This show does a great job of incorporating a powerful soundtrack in a way that actually makes sense and moves the storyline forward.

Published

By

I love this cast most ardently.

Today is a very important day, y’all. It’s the 15th anniversary of the Pride & Prejudice movie! That’s right, we’ve all been simping over that hand flex scene for a decade and a half now. Isn’t that wild??

Are you curious what the original cast is doing all these years later? Well, I did some good ole ~social media stalking~ so you don’t have to. Here’s what they’re up to:

1.

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet

Now: Keira is still, of course, the queen of period pieces and pirate movies. She went on to star in The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Anna Karenina, and Colette.

2.

5.

Jena Malone as Lydia Bennet

Now: You might recognize Jena from her recent roles of Johanna Mason from the Hunger Games movies, Hope Harlingen in Inherent Vice, or Sage Ross in Nocturnal Animals. She was also the singer/songwriter for the band The Shoe, though they haven’t released new music since 2015.
