Birthday wishes pour in as Anil Kumble turns 50 | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli led the birthday wishes for Kings XI Punjab coach Anil Kumble as the former India captain and coach turned 50 on Saturday.
“Wish you a very happy birthday Anil Bhai @anilkumble1074. Have a great day,” tweeted Kohli.

Both Kohli and Kumble had worked together as a captain-coach combine with the India team before the two had to part ways following acrimony ahead of the ODI series in West Indies in 2017 and immediately after the Champions Trophy where India lost the final to Pakistan.
His long-time teammate Sachin Tendulkar too wished him. “Happy Birthday Anil. Wishing you the very best for all your future endeavours. Hope to catch up soon,” Tendulkar wrote on Twitter while posting a picture of him, Harbhajan, Laxman with Kumble.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag took a humorous tone, recalling the Adelaide Test where Kumble fell short of 13 runs due to his advice to go after the bowling.
Sehwag took the blame for that while wishing his former skipper. “Officially, I had 136 Intern’tnl wickets, but unofficially had one which was costliest, when I asked @anilkumble1074 bhai to not do tuktuk to offspinner & score his century quickly and he got out on 87. Sorry Anil Bhai, but congratulations on the half century today. Happy Birthday,” tweeted Sehwag.

Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh wrote on his timeline, “To someone who motivated me when I needed to hear it the most – Happy Birthday jumbo @anilkumble1074. Birthday cake your contribution towards Indian cricket and more so towards nurturing the youngsters has been priceless. Sending you all my love and good wishes on your half century Red heart Image.”

Among others to wish him were VVS Laxman, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina.

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians fast pace bowler Trent Boult removed both Delhi Capitals openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw within the first three overs of their innings to take his wickets tally in the powerplay phase to 12, the most by a bowler this Indian Premier League.
Fast bowler Jofra Archer of Rajasthan Royals is the next best with nine wickets.

New Zealander Boult has also taken a wicket in his very first over on five occasions this season.

On Saturday, Boult removed Shikhar Dhawan for a duck off the third ball of his over. In the previous game between the two teams on October 11, Boult removed Shaw off the third delivery of his first over.
Boult, who picked three wickets for 21 on Saturday, is among the top wicket-takers this IPL with 20 scalps. He is joint third with Kings XI Punjab fast bowler Mohammed Shami.

‘It’s over’, Guardiola rules out return as Barca boss | Football News

By

SHEFFIELD (United Kingdom): Pep Guardiola ruled out ever taking charge of Barcelona for a second spell as the Manchester City boss insisted he retains the “desire” to succeed in England.
Guardiola is the most decorated coach in Barca’s glorious history after winning 14 trophies in four years in charge between 2008 and 2012.
Josep Maria Bartomeu finally bowed to pressure to resign as president of the Catalan giants this week, with one of the leading candidates to take over, Victor Font, saying he wants to bring legends like Guardiola and his former players Xavi and Carles Puyol back to work for the club.
“I said many times, my period as a manager in Barcelona is over. I think in life there is once you have to do things,” Guardiola said after City’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.
“There are incredible people who can be in charge, now for example (Barcelona coach) Ronald Koeman is an excellent manager. It is over.”
A boyhood Barca fan, Guardiola also enjoyed an illustrious playing career at the Camp Nou and still holds season tickets as a supporter.
“I will come back to my seats to see my club to watch a game. I am incredibly happy here, still I have the desire to do well and this is the most important thing.
“Now there will be elections in Barcelona. Hopefully they can choose the right board to maintain this incredible club Barcelona in the highest level.”
Guardiola is already into the longest managerial spell of his career with this his fifth season at City.
His side still look a long way off the heights they reached in winning back-to-back Premier League titles between 2017 and 2019, but they are slowly getting up to speed after a start to the campaign disrupted by injuries, coronavirus cases and just a two-week long pre-season.
Kyle Walker’s long-range effort against his former club was enough to secure City’s fourth win in five games in all competitions as they move up to seventh in the Premier League, just two points off the top.
Without a natural striker due to injuries to Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, City struggled to turn their dominance into goals at Bramall Lane.
“We played really well,” added Guardiola. “We struggled to score goals for the chances we created, 16 shots, eight on target, is a lot against this team.”
Aaron Ramsdale was busy in the Blades’ goal as he twice denied Ferran Torres from close range, while he unconvincingly parried Rodrigo’s long-range effort behind.
Walker finally broke the deadlock from similar range on 28 minutes as his shot arrowed low past Ramsdale’s right-hand, but there was a muted celebration from the England international against his boyhood club.
“My mum and dad live here, so if I’d celebrated I’d have got a lot of stick,” said Walker. “I’m a Sheffield United fan, so I couldn’t celebrate.”
Kevin De Bruyne flashed a shot wide following another attacking burst from Walker early in the second-half before Ramsdale produced his best save of the game from Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick.
However, City’s failure to kill off the game gave Chris Wilder’s men chances to snatch an unlikely point.
John Lundstram had the best chance for the hosts when he side-footed Sander Berge’s low cross over.
But Sheffield United have still scored just three goals in seven games to start the season and remain second bottom on just one point.

IPL 2020: Rohit is getting better and will be back soon, assures Kieron Pollard | Cricket News

DUBAI: Mumbai Indians stand-in captain Kieron Pollard on Saturday informed that regular skipper Rohit Sharma‘s injured left hamstring is on the mend and he is expected to be back soon for the team.
Rohit sustained a recurrent left hamstring injury during MI’s IPL match against Kings XI Punjab, which also prompted the national selection committee to leave him out of the Australia-bound Indian team.

“Rohit is getting better and hopefully he’ll be back soon,” Pollard said at the post-match presentation without putting a date on his comeback.

There was a possibility of Rohit returning to action on November 3 during Mumbai Indians’ last league game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the match is now inconsequential with the defending champions having ensured a top-two finish after beating Delhi Capitals on Saturday.
“There is a bright chance of Rohit playing in the play-offs. Having ensured a top-two finish, it gives him extra days to get fitter,” a source privy to the senior cricketer’s injury management told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
The stop-gap captain seemed pretty happy after MI’s 16 wins from 17 games under his leadership over the years.
“We need to play another couple of good games and get to the final. This isn’t supposed to be our year (MI wins trophies in odd years only), but it’s been working for us so far,” Pollard said cheekily.
MI started with Jayant Yadav in the powerplay and Pollard gave reasons why he delayed bringing Bumrah into the attack.
“We wanted to bowl spinners in the powerplay with some grip on offer,” Pollard said.
He also praised Ishan Kishan, who has had some good knocks this IPL.
“Ishan has gotten better in every game, and once he gets going, he’s hard to get rid of. He didn’t even start (this season), came in the playing XI at No. 4 and then came out to open and just blew us away.”
